As a big fan of Metallica, one of the best and most original Metal bands in the world, I’m surprised to find that a lot of my friends who prefer chart stuff and house music own at least one Metallica album.
They seem to be the heaviest band who’ve had chart success and their anthems such as ‘Enter Sandman’ have been heard in many mainstream forms. So have they bridged the gap from a specialist genre to the masses?
Formed by current drummer Lars Ulrich and singer/guitarist James Hetfield in 1981, they are now the 7th biggest selling act in American history. They did not bow to convention in the 80’s choosing to ignore the increasingly popular synthesizer sounds, choosing to write what would become some of the most influential music of all time.
My personal favourite album is the self-titled ‘Black Album’ which features classics such as ‘Enter Sandman’ ‘Nothing Else Matters’ and ‘The Unforgiven’. Described as the softer side of Metallica this has been their most popular album to date which would perhaps explain their ability to convert the popsters to listening to a bit of quality guitar based metal music. |
